Treatment for drugs misuse is available
Treatment for drugs misuse can work provided your loved one is ready. You cannot force someone into treatment: they have to be motivated and looking to changing their own behaviour. Read more about this on our understanding drug use page.
No single treatment option works for everybody. Effective treatment depends on the drug or drugs the person is using, their level of use, and their readiness to make changes.
Heroin and other opitate based drugs are physically addictive. The main treatment option for heroin addiction is substitute prescribing, to help the user cope with the withdrawal effects.
For other non-opitate drugs, the main treatment would be counselling.
Families and carers can play an important role in supporting a loved one during treatment, providing much needed support and encouragement during what can be a difficult process.
