Rita’s story

Read about the recovery of Rita and her son

‘My son started taking drugs at the age of 15,’ writes Rita. ‘I was out of my mind with worry. I lived in fear for him when he was out and in fear for my daughter and myself when he was at home. He was so out of control that he was placed in care for two years.

‘I couldn’t eat or sleep. I ate very little. Before long alcohol became part of my everyday life. Over the years I coped with my son on my own until I found Jericho House family support group.

A meeting for me

‘My son was 24 years old, very sick with drugs and became violent towards me. When I went to the first meeting it was to get help for my son and discovered the meeting was to help me.

I continue to attend the family support meeting every week for support which I strongly believe has saved my life and my son’s

‘I was given understanding and support. I was able to talk about my feelings and indentify with other families. I learnt not to accept the unacceptable. I was given guidance and strength to remove my son from my life until he was ready to get help to come off drugs.

Lifesaving support

‘Most of all, I was given hope that me and my son would recover from his sickness.

‘My son is now 26 and I am happy to say he has not taken drugs for the last six months and is living with me again.

‘I continue to attend the family support meeting every week for support which I strongly believe has saved my life and my son’s.’
