Helping you cope

A key factor in coping is feeling that you have choices and some control in your life

Dealing with the drugs misuse of someone close to you can be very stressful and disruptive. Their drug use can have physical, emotional and mental effects on you and other family members.

Everyone reacts differently. Some common responses include:

  • Thinking you can deal with the problem and control it;
  • Thinking you are responsible for, or capable of fixing the problem;
  • Focusing on your loved one at the expense of your own needs.

This section looks at how you are coping and allows you to consider different ways of responding.

A key factor in coping is feeling that you have choices and some control in your life. Whilst you cannot control a loved one’s drugs misuse, you can control your thoughts and your responses.
