FAQs

Goal: To celebrate our 20th birthday we are inviting people to walk and count their steps every day in May. Collectively our team is aiming for a total of 20 million steps walked (If we get 100 people taking part this averages out at around 6000 steps per day)

When does it take part: Registration for the challenge opens on Wednesday 29 March and closes on Sunday 30 April. The challenge begins on Monday 1 May. Steps will be counted throughout May 2023.

Who can take part: Anyone! People we support, our supporters, staff and their friends and family – the challenge is open to all.

What does it cost: It is FREE – anyone who signs up will get a free Scottish Families water bottle, a paper sheet to track their steps and the option to sign up to our online Facebook group if they wish.

Do I have to fundraise: Only fundraise if you want to – you can also take part just for fun. As a thank you, anyone who raises £50 or more will get an exclusive Scottish Families 20th Anniversary t-shirt.

How do I fundraise: Sign up to our online Facebook challenge to get started. Any questions? Community Fundraiser Clare can help clare@sfad.org.uk

How can I count my steps: It is up to you, most smart phones have a pedometer app, you can use a separate step counter or you can estimate your steps based on the distance walked (one mile = 2000 steps)

Why walking: We believe it is important to look after yourself. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that going for a walk each day (even a short one) has benefits for your physical and mental health. Better yet, a walk with a friend can be a great way to take some time out for yourself. Even if you only manage a small number of steps in a day you will still be contributing to our total – we have a long way to go so every step will make a difference and help us reach our 20 million step goal!

How to sign up: You can sign-up to the challenge here.

Can I share my story: Yes – join our Facebook group and share your photos and steps. We’d love to see it!

Can I take part anonymously: Yes – there is no need to join the Facebook group unless you want to. If you would prefer not to fill out the registration form speak directly to a member of Scottish Families staff or email info@sfad.org.uk
